Free Entertainment in Houston

July 28th, 2008

Via WWdn in Exile:

Domy Books, which looks like an awesome place I’m not cool enough to hang out at, is showing Stand By Me for free tonight.  They have a regular Wednesday night movie showing.  Alas for me, I have to work at the crack of dawn on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Well, pretty much any day.

Also thanks to Wil for turning me onto Houstonist.  (You can follow them on twitter too!) Jon & I want to try to do more at home, and there’s a lot we haven’t seen here even.

Shameless Plug, but for my husband!

July 24th, 2008

Jonathan is quite a photographer.  He’s taken some of his best work and put it in a gallery at Shutterfly.  You can order copes, prints, posters, notecards, mugs, even a mouse pad.  He’s got a great butterfly gallery.  You can also buy an awesome photo of the Alamo.

He’s currently going through our vacation pictures and will continue to add to his gallery.  I’ll post updates.  Really, he’s quite good.  :)   Though, I might be biased.

New Site Up & Running

May 15th, 2008

Ok, I have meredithwatmough.com up and running now. The old blog is now a journal of our trying to get pregnant.  So those of you completely uninterested that, can check out your regularly scheduled blog here at meredithwatmough.com.

Everything’s not completely done yet though. I’ve transferred the entries, but I’m cleaning some old stuff out and tryign to fix the weird characters that came over in place of apostrophes.  So ignore the little errors, but otherwise enjoy!

Don’t forget to update your blogroll and bloglines to meredithwatmough.com!

A Dark and Stormy Night

February 22nd, 2008

Stephanie from Mama Drama posted an interesting link. Well. Who knew? Apparently it’s a good thing I haven’t gotten pregnant. I’d be getting our child electrocuted left and right! Now I know…

}

4. Delete code (if there).

Rant Against Socialized Medicine

July 2nd, 2007

OK, the US health care system isn’t perfect. In fact, it’s full of problems. Like my very sick friend who can’t get the medicine she needs until she’s one foot in the grave. I’m sure there are other stories like hers out there. Apparently that’s the topic of Michael Moore’s Sicko. [Which I have no intention of seeing. I can't stand Michael Moore.] But, I do agree our health care system needs some work.

However, I take issue with everyone who upholds the UK system as a role model. It’s not good there either. More people in the UK are switching to private health care. The NHS is in debt. The costs are making it necessary for the NHS to cut jobs and services back.

My friend H’s sister-in-law made the move to private health care when her husband needed surgery. The wait would have been 6 weeks on the NHS, but was only 2 days after she got him on her private insurance through work. Also, H’s husband had a tooth pulled and they sent him home with a bloody hole in his head, no aftercare at all. Just “Hope that heals up.”

I’ve been really lucky that I haven’t had serious issues with my health insurance. We’ve always been able to cover the costs of the parts insurance didn’t cover. There is a problem with the system, but I doubt socialized medicine is the way to fix it. Read up on my friend Kerri’s problems with military health care!

Tragedy Hits Family Again

July 2nd, 2007

David Ritcheson, the 18-year-old victim of the Spring pipe beating attack last year, allegedly jumped to his death from a Cozumel-bound cruise ship Sunday. Ritcheson recently testified to Congress about his experience, calling for an expansion of hate crime laws.
Houston Chronicle

This is such a shame. After all that poor young man went through, and now his family is suffering again. It’s just a sad story. I’ve followed it from the beginning, mostly because it happened less than a mile from my house. They have my deepest condolences.

Jailbird Free!

June 26th, 2007

So. Paris got out of jail today. Did anyone else notice how good she looked? Normally, I think she’s just awful, but in her “released from jail” photos, she looked good. Young, fresh, not overly made up or hung over/stoned looking. It was really a quite nice change of pace. Now, if only she make a permanent positive change.
